Restructuring a complex website for care services, locations, and careers

Initial situation

AWO GESA in the Mittelrhein district operates numerous care facilities and services. Previously, many of these facilities had their own separate websites. Over time, this led to an expansion of their digital presence, which reflected the diversity of their offerings but only partially in a clearly structured format. As a result, content, locations, and information had to be reorganized to make them more accessible to visitors.

Challenge

At the same time, the website was designed to appeal to different target audiences: on the one hand, family members looking for care services, and on the other, job seekers seeking information about jobs and career opportunities. In addition, content from various facilities needed to be clearly consolidated within a unified structure so that it remained well-organized and easy to find.

Objectives

The goal was to create a corporate website for AWO GESA that helps users navigate the site and presents content in a clear, structured manner.

  • clearly display care services and locations

  • highlighting career paths

  • develop a scalable website structure

  • Maintain content centrally to reduce maintenance effort and avoid errors

Target Group 1: People in need of care & their relatives

Target Group 2: New Employees

Strategy

A structure designed to meet a variety of user needs

At the start of the project, CRENEO collaborated with AWO GESA to conduct a workshop aimed at defining the fundamentals of the new website. During the workshop, the information architecture, key user perspectives, and the content structure of the website were developed. At the same time, the workshop served to establish the design direction and plan the image production.

Based on this, a clear navigation structure was developed for care services, locations, and career paths. At the same time, the visual style and photography concept were developed to authentically portray the facilities and define a consistent visual language for the AWO GESA corporate website. The design foundations were aligned with the existing building blocks of the network platform – and extended them.

Implementation

The new corporate website

The new Corporate Website AWO GESA brings together care services, facilities and career paths in a clearly structured platform. The project scope includes, among other things:

  • 68 pages of content with a clear navigation structure
  • 15 location pages for facilities in the Mittelrhein district
  • Filter options for locations and jobs
  • Modular and responsive interface system based on the shared building blocks of the network platform
  • zentrale Verwaltung von Download-Dokumenten
  • Integration of accessibility features

Information structure

The new information architecture translates the organization’s complex structure into clear, easy-to-understand navigation for care services, locations, and career paths. This allows visitors to quickly access relevant information—whether they are looking for care services or seeking information about career opportunities.

Filter options

Filter options for locations and jobs provide a central way to narrow down your search. They allow you to specifically filter content and find suitable listings more quickly. This feature makes navigation much easier, especially on a website with many facilities.

Imagery and Visual Language

Alongside the structural implementation, a new visual world was created for the Corporate Website of AWO GESA. In several on-site photo productions, staff members, residents and everyday life in the facilities were documented. A total of nine shooting days produced authentic insights into the various locations. The photography is additionally complemented by video sequences that make the atmosphere and daily life of the facilities visible.

This visual language combines with a distinctive formal language of slanted surfaces and rounded radii, derived from the logo, which gives the website an independent visual dynamism.

Iconography

Complementing the visual design, a reduced iconography was developed that makes key information quickly accessible. The icons pick up on the formal language of the website and translate content such as equipment, location or room offerings into clear visual signals. They thus support orientation on the location pages and supplement texts and images with an easily understandable visual layer.

Result

A digital presence that combines services and employer branding

The new Corporate Website AWO GESA brings together 16 care facilities with 1,600 care places on a shared platform – 68 subpages, clearly structured by care services, locations and career paths. People in need of care and their relatives can find services and locations directly via filter functions. Applicants access vacancies, training positions and entry opportunities via a dedicated, visible area – the website functions simultaneously as a care platform and as an employer presence. A clear role distribution in the backend enables cross-location content management without agency dependency. The modular design system ensures that new facilities can be integrated in future without rebuilding. This means the AWO Network Corporate Website System continues to grow – with GESA as its most extensive unit to date.
